Egypt Declares State of Emergency

Luke 21:9-10: [Jesus said] "When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away." Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom."

Egypt’s government has declared a state of emergency that will last at least a month. A curfew has been put in place for 11 provinces starting at 7 p.m. local time.

The country’s health ministry is reporting that 149 people are dead in clashes between supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and government forces who cleared out Pro-Mohammed Morsi protest camps throughout the country.

The Muslim Brotherhood, who has been calling for protests and violence to restore themselves to power, is claiming that thousands have actually been killed.

The government says the state of emergency is necessary “due to deliberate sabotage, and attacks on public and private buildings and the loss of life by extremist groups.” The government also states their troops did not use live ammunition against the protesters, only tear gas, so that any deaths from gunfire would be as a result of weapons fired by protesters.

Egypt’s state news agency says the Muslim Brotherhood protesters have attacked a number of Christian churches today as well.

The BBC reports the 17-year-old daughter of Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed el-Beltagy was among the dead.
