Israel releases images alleging Hezbollah missile project in Beirut

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – The Israeli military on Thursday released a video clip and photos of what it said were Hezbollah Shi’ite militia rocket building sites in Lebanon.

The images were distributed minutes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the U.N. General Assembly that Israel had evidence that Iran was helping Hezbollah give its missiles precision-guided accuracy.

“In Lebanon, Iran is directing Hezbollah to build secret sites to convert inaccurate projectiles into precision-guided missiles,

missiles that can target deep inside Israel within an accuracy of 10

meters (yards),” he said.

Reuters was not immediately able to verify the Israeli assertions in Netanyahu’s speech and in the five photographs and the 76-second clip released by the Israel Defence Forces.

The clip refers to a “Missile Accuracy Project (MAP)” which Israel said Hezbollah had tried to transfer “to the heart of the city of Beirut.”

The Israeli military said the deployment of the facilities close to Beirut international airport were “knowingly jeopardizing the Lebanese civilian population.”

In Beirut, Hezbollah’s media officer Muhammad Afif declined to comment on the report.

Oklahoma To Get New Earthquake Hazard Maps

Oklahoma is getting a new set of maps.

The U.S. Geological Survey announced they will be releasing new earthquake hazard maps for Oklahoma after collections of data from a swarm of quakes the last few years.

Oklahoma in the last year has received more quakes of 3.0 or greater than California.  The number of quakes in the state has been 300 times higher in the last six years compared to previous decades.

The news of the maps comes on the heels of another report from the USGS that Oklahoma is likely to see a major quake from reawakened fault lines.

“By identifying the faults, we are providing some guidance about where major earthquakes can happen,” Dan McNamara, USGS research geophysicist and lead author of the paper, said in a news release.

McNamara says that current maps are underestimating the earthquake hazard for not just Oklahoma but bordering states as well.

HarperCollins Caught Publishing Middle East Map Without Israel

HarperCollins is on the defensive after the discovery they were selling an atlas of the Middle East that did not include Israel.

The Tablet, an international publication of the Catholic Church, discovered the atlas eliminating Israel.  The atlas was sold to English speaking schools in Muslim-majority countries in the Persian Gulf.

HarperCollins recalled the atlas after the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales said they were harming the peace process.

“HarperCollins regrets the omission of the name Israel from their Collins Middle East Atlas. This product has now been removed from sale in all territories and all remaining stock will be pulped. HarperCollins sincerely apologizes for this omission and for any offence caused,” HarperCollins posted on their website.

“The publication of this atlas will confirm Israel’s belief that there exists a hostility towards their country from parts of the Arab world. It will not help to build up a spirit of trust leading to peaceful co-existence,” Bishop Declan Lang told The Tablet.

“Maps can be a very powerful tool in terms of de-legitimising ‘the other’ and can lead to confusion rather than clarity. We would be keen to see relevant bodies ensure that all atlases anywhere reflect the official UN position on nations, boundaries and all political features,” added Dr. Jane Clements, director of the Council of Christians and Jews.
