A group of atheists is trying to force the 9/11 Museum to remove the “Miracle Cross” because they say its existence in the museum violates the Constitution.
The “Miracle Cross” is a 17-foot cross-shaped beam that was found in the rubble of 9/11. The cross was displayed at Ground Zero and many workers on the site considered it a source of comfort and hope in the midst of the death and destruction.
The anti-Christian group American Atheists says the cross is part of religious history, not American history, and says that its existence in the 9/11 Museum that opens in May violates the separation of church and state.
The Museum is on land owned by the Port Authority and financed by taxpayers.
The atheist group says that if the cross is displayed, that his group wants a similar item such as a plaque that reads, “atheists died here too.”
Federal Judge Reena Raggi appeared to be skeptical of the claims by the atheists.
“There are countless cases of museums including religious artifacts in their exhibits and it’s going to be described in a way that talks about the history of the object,” Judge Raggi said. “What is the problem here? An argument has been made that you’re trying to censor history.”
A ruling is expected in several months.
The FBI has quietly changed their primary mission.
The FBI Fact Sheet has declared for decades the primary function of the FBI was “law enforcement.” A Washington-based National Security lawyer noticed earlier this year that the Fact Sheet has changed to say the primary function is “national security.”
An FBI spokesman would not confirm the day the change to the FBI’s Fact Sheet was made but said the change is more accurate.
“When our mission changed after 9/11, our fact sheet changed to reflect that,” FBI spokesman Paul Bresson told Foreign Policy online. He pointed out that counter-terrorism is the agency’s biggest mission right now so it’s proper to say their primary function is national security.
The FBI doubled the amount of agents working on counter-terrorism between 2001 and 2009 according to a 2010 Inspector General report.
The U.S. government has announced they are seeking an al-Qaeda terrorist in connection with the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attack.
Muhammed Jamal was arrested last fall in Egypt and imprisoned by the Egyptian government for terrorist activity but has since disappeared. Various intelligence reports say he is still in Egypt while others place him inside Yemen.
Four Americans were killed in the September 11, 2012 attack on the Benghazi embassy.
The release from the government about the hunt for an Al Qaeda terrorist in the attack is seen as a direct rebuke of a New York Times story that said al Qaeda had no connection to the terrorist attack. The newspaper had been receiving criticism from elected officials in both political parties saying that intelligence confirmed the involvement of al Qaeda.
The capture of an al-Qaeda terrorist in Libya by U.S. Special Forces has caused a stir among Islamic extremists to the point they’re declaring open season on Americans.
“Over the past few days, we picked up significant chatter related to the kidnapping of American citizens in response to the abduction of Abu Anas al-Libi,” a source told Fox News.
One of the terrorists being monitored by analysts told followers on Twitter there was no need to consult with anyone if you wanted to kidnap an American.
According to multiple jihadist websites, the general plan is to kidnap a number of Americans to use as bargaining chips to get terrorists released from jails across the world. Specifically mentioned was Omar Abd Al-Rahman, convicted for his part in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-described creator of the 9/11 attacks.
While there is nothing explicitly saying al-Qaeda is supporting the evolving plan, no leaders from the group have taken any steps to stop it.
A French citizen believed to have links with a German al-Qaeda cell connected to the September 11th attacks in New York is in custody in Paris.
Naamen Meziche has been placed under “formal investigation”. He was deported from Pakistan on Tuesday on charges of criminal conspiracy regarding a terrorist enterprise. Meziche is believed an associate of al-Qaeda commander Younis al-Mauritani who planned attacks for Osama Bin Laden in Australia, Europe and the U.S.
“This is a big fish, at the historic heart of al-Qaeda,” a French anti-terrorism officer told AFP news agency.
Meziche recruited jihadists at a mosque in Hamburg, Germany where the 9/11 hijackers regularly met before moving to the United States.
A source inside the court told French media outlets that evidence against Meziche will date back into the 1990s.
