A mutation discovered in a new strain of bird flu has rendered the virus resistant to treatment drugs without limiting its ability to spread.
Most seasonal flu strains often become less transmissible when developing drug resistance, but scientists discovered that the H7N9 bird flu does not lose any of its spreading potential even with drug resistance.
Researchers said they do not believe this will make H7N9 any more likely to develop into a pandemic, but do recommend that doctors should be careful in their use of anti-viral medicines and consider using other drugs instead of Tamiflu to treat H7N9 cases.
The H7N9 bird flu has infected at least 139 people so far in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, and has killed 45 people.
Officials announced on Friday that the recent earthquake swarms and sudden change in height suggest a new eruption is brewing offshore El Hierro in the Canary Islands.
Following the announcement, the volcanic island was struck by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake at 12:46 p.m. ET according to the National Geographic Institute. The quake was felt throughout the Canary Islands.
Before the quake early Friday afternoon, parts of El Hierro had swelled nearly 3 inches in the past week and more than 550 earthquakes rattled the opposite side of the island between Monday and Wednesday. According to the Volcanological Institute of the Canaries (Involcan), the earthquakes are caused by underground magma fracturing rocks and swelling the surface as the hot rock reaches upward.
In 2011, El Hierro was the site of an underwater volcanic eruption that forced residents to evacuate.

Our hearts are saddened by the news of Paul Crouch’s passing. Paul’s great accomplishment of building the world’s largest conglomerate of Christian television networks and stations is his living legacy that will continue to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ to millions around the world. Paul’s passion for broadcasting influenced my life as a young boy when he was youth pastor of the church I attended in Muskegon, Michigan. Later on in life we worked together in the early years of Trinity Broadcasting Network. Paul Crouch is truly one of the fathers of Christian television.
No matter what your station in life, no matter your situation or your circumstance, there is always something to be thankful for. In fact, thankfulness is a choice that we make each moment of our lives as we live in this fallen world and wait for the final redemption from it.
The truth that we must all get down deep into our souls is that Jesus has already redeemed us, if we believe in Him and receive Him as our Lord and Savior. When this world and its problems challenge our sense of eternal well-being, the scriptures provide all the answers we need to confront and overcome the lies of the enemy.

Six people were arrested and charged Monday for stealing $45 million in a worldwide ATM heist.
The five men and one woman were accused of being members of an international cybercriminal organization that targeted prepaid debit cards issued by Middle Eastern banks. They deleted withdrawal limits from compromised accounts then sent teams of “cashers” to make synchronized withdrawals from ATMs worldwide. The six that were arrested visited over 140 ATMs in New York City and withdrew approximately $2.8 million.
“This case is another example of the ability of cybercriminals to inflict significant damage to world financial systems,” said Steven Hughes, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service New York field office.
Five of the defendants have pleaded not guilty in federal court. The sixth defendant is expected to be arraigned Tuesday. Each person faces up to 7.5 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
Police in Toronto say that nearly 400 children have been freed from being forced to engage in child pornography after a three-year investigation.
The investigation into Azov Films that produced DVDs and streamed videos of naked boys from Germany, Romania and the Ukraine claimed they were “naturists” and said they were legal in the Canada and the U.S.
The investigation, code named Project Spade, resulted in 100 arrests in Canada and 240 in other countries around the world.
The head of the company, Canadian citizen Brian Way, has been in custody since being arrested in May 2011 following an undercover operation. He faces charges with 11 different crimes including possession of and the import and export of child pornography.
The Toronto Police Service Child Exploitation Section used the Azov Films website to obtain the identities and contact information of customers.
