Narrative
Pastor Marvin Winans began by giving a history of his family, including how his mother started him off singing when he was four years old, and his siblings a little older. Mama Winans, on occasion, would take some of the children to sing at their grandfather’s church. Coming from a family of 10 children, Dad and Mom Winans both worked more than one job to make ends meet.
Pastor Marvin recalled the time his father, after arriving home from one of those jobs, looked at his children and said they were talented enough to have a concert. Some time later, he took over managing them as a quartet, pushing them to be the best and to partake of regular rehearsals. The patriarch taught them how to harmonize and make beautiful music together.
After eight years, however, Marvin said he and his brothers told their dad they just couldn’t do it anymore. So they retired. Some time afterward, Marvin and brother Ronald started their own group, “The Testimonial Singers,” that went on to put out a gospel album. In time, their popularity increased to the point that Andrae Crouch changed their group name to “The Winans.” From there, the family group went on to earn more than 20 Grammy Awards and touch the hearts and lives of gospel music listeners all over the world.
As children, the Winans held their own pretend Grammy ceremonies in the living room of their home. But winning his first award left Marvin at a loss for words and unable to give any type of acceptance speech.
While he and his brothers were shuffled away from the stage to an interview area where other winners were gathered, he felt the Spirit speak to him and remind him that he was not called to win awards, but to win souls. He said that inspirational thought sobered him and brought him back to reality, and also restored his voice to him so he could then answer any questions reporters were asking.
His family, he went on, was the first to sign with R&B producer Quincy Jones, who arranged many of their albums. He jokingly mentioned that he was famous before Oprah Winfrey was and that she, in her days as an unknown TV reporter, had interviewed the group for a news show. Later, they were one of the first acts she invited to appear with her when she started her “Oprah” day time talk show. She remains a good friend of the family today.
Pastor Jim noted that the Winans know who they are as Christians, which enables them to interact in the world of entertainment without compromise. Pastor Marvin said Jesus is not an addendum to his life but is life itself. A positive message that his siblings BeBe and CeCe echoed when they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Jim said Christians need to be able to infiltrate the world, taking the message and example of the Lord with them wherever they find themselves. He reminded that the Bible shows that Jesus did not limit his associations with the holy and pure but was known to “hang out” with prostitutes, tax collectors and sinners, ever teaching the word. The same mission and objective motivates the Winans family and Jim Bakker ministries: to lead people to Jesus Christ.
