The last time New York City faced the cold it’s facing today, Grover Cleveland occupied the Oval Office, Utah was admitted as the 45th state, and the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece.
Central Park in New York registered 4 degrees Tuesday morning passing the previous record of 6 degrees. The temperature on Tuesday was 50 degrees lower than Monday.
Wind chills throughout New York will remain well below zero throughout the next two days.
The weather in New York was so cold that Amtrak had to suspend service because their signals stopped working due to the cold weather.
Other record lows were set throughout the country. Chicago broke a record with -16 degrees, Fort Wayne, Indiana saw -13 degrees. Multiple towns in Oklahoma and Texas reported record lows along with wind chills passing -40 degrees.
Officials in some parts of the upper Midwest were telling residents to just stay home instead of venturing out into potentially deadly weather conditions.
Wind chills across North Dakota and Minnesota have reached as much as 70 degrees below zero causing exposed skin to freeze in minutes. The state of Minnesota called off school for extreme cold for the first time in 17 years because of the anticipated wind chills.
Temperatures dove across the entire country from International Falls, Minnesota at -28 degrees overnight to 27 degrees along the Gulf of Mexico in Biloxi, Mississippi.
The temperatures were so cold in Chicago that thousands of flights had to be delayed or cancelled. Nationwide, around 3,530 flights were delayed and over 2,500 had to be cancelled.
In addition to the frigid temperatures, icy road conditions led to hundreds of accidents nationwide. Power outages are spotty through the northeast because of wet power lines icing in the frigid conditions.
A massive winter storm that has brought snow over New England for the last 36 hours will end up dumping as much as 30 inches of snow in parts of Boston.
The storm has also brought temperatures in the dangerous range.
Most communities across the northeast are reporting temperatures that are topping out in the single digits above zero with wind chills significantly below zero.
New York City told residents to stay home until the storm ends. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service said the wind chill through the northeast corridor is so low that exposed skin could start to freeze in 15 minutes.
School districts across the region were closed to keep children safe.
Officials believe that temperatures will rise into the 40s on Sunday with rain helping to clear roads.
New England is in the path of a major snowstorm that will begin Thursday and continue into the weekend.
Two storm cells are merging in the mid-Atlantic region and moving up the Eastern seaboard. Blizzard like conditions are likely from New York through Boston and into Maine.
Officials say it won’t be one of the worst storms to hit the area but the frigid temperatures combined with the snow will make traveling through the area very hazardous. Residents are being warned that long-term power outages are a possibility from the heavy snow and high winds.
The storm is also expected to cause major headaches for travelers who are returning from Christmas and New Years vacations.
Transportation officials are warning that layers of ice are likely to form on highways after nightfall and are advising people to stay in through Friday if possible.
An epic winter blast has brought temperatures in parts of Canada below temperatures on an uninhabited planet.
The Mars Curiosity Rover reported a high temperature on Mars Tuesday of -20 degrees. The city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada did not reach a high of -20 degrees until after 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
The temperature in the city was so cold throughout most of the day that exposed skin can freeze in less than five minutes.
Meteorologists in the province said that wind chills in the northern parts of the province made it feel around -50 degrees throughout the day Tuesday.
Surprisingly, the Mars-matching temperature was not the record for coldest day in Canadian history. The historical mark for December 30th is -36 degrees.
