Egypt’s interim prime minister has stated in a televised address to his nation that today’s action against supporters of Mohammed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood was necessary because authorities had to restore security.
Hazem Beblawi said the decision to move into the camps and disperse the protesters was not easy.
Government figures on Wednesday night said that 235 civilians had died in Wednesday’s action. The Muslim Brotherhood, who has been spurring the protests in an attempt to regain power, claims that thousands were killed.
Key leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood are under arrest as a result of the protests. Police now control the areas once housing the camps.
Beblawi said that police had instructions not to fire weapons on protesters, expressed his regret for the loss of life and said the state of emergency will be lifted as soon as possible.
Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim said police “dealt professionally” with the protesters and that 43 police had been killed by Muslim Brotherhood supporters.
