Over 600 million people are without power in India after three power grids completely collapsed a day after one of the three grids had individually failed.
The power failure is having wide-ranging impact beyond residents as business are closed and the transportation system has been paralyzed. Hundreds of trains are at a standstill. Hospitals are relying on backup generators. Continue reading
Over two million people are still without power and the death toll has risen to 18 in the aftermath of a weekend storm that roared across the eastern United States. Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio and the District of Columbia have declared states of emergency due to the disaster.
Power is reported out along the eastern seaboard from New Jersey to North Carolina and as far west as Illinois.
Compounding the problem is a record heat waves that is keeping daytime temperatures at and over 100 degrees. Many residents have no access to air conditioning or refrigerators. Continue reading
A space weather scientist in England is reporting that a “solar storm” is likely to happen soon which could send cities into darkness as it destroys power grids and other electronic devices.
Mike Hapgood of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxford, England has published a piece in the science journal Nature that says the world is not prepared for a truly damaging solar storm. Continue reading
