South African Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi told a public meeting yesterday that more the one in every four schoolgirls, 28% of the age group, is HIV positive.
By comparison, the rate of infection among the full population is just 10%. The rate among schoolboys is just 4%.
Motsoaledi attributed the infection rate to “sugar daddies” who are preying on young, poor South African girls. They promise money, gifts and other luxuries in return for sex only to dismiss the girls if they become infected or pregnant.
“We must take a stand against sugar daddies because they are destroying our children,” Motsoaledi said.
In addition to the high HIV infection rate, over 94,000 schoolgirls became pregnant last year with 82% of those students choosing to have an abortion at a state facility. Motsoaledi spoke very pointedly about the need to end abortion.
“77,000 girls had abortions at public facilities. We can no longer live like that,” he said. “We want to put an end to it.”
