As news broke of a 15th case and 9th fatality attributed to the recently discovered Novel Coronavirus (NCoV), scientists in Holland have discovered the way the virus infects human cells.
The discovery could provide the key to creating a vaccine against the virus.
The scientists discovered a cell surface protein that connects with the DPP4 receptor in the body. Cells containing the DPP4 receptor are located more in the lower respiratory tract than the upper tract which explains why the virus does not cause flu-like symptoms like other coronoviruses.
NCoV kills by causing massive damage to the lungs.
The study also investigated whether current DPP4 inhibitors would work in preventing the virus but were found to be completely ineffective.
Scientists also say that goats are now a possible transmission method. Previously it was believed that NCoV was related to a virus known to attack bats. Experts with the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands say that it’s possible the virus could come through either or both sources.
NCoV, while similar to the SARS virus that killed ten percent of the 8,000 people infected, has a significantly increase mortality rate of over 50%.
