The Faithfulness of our Wonderful Lord

Betty Dewhirst

As I think back in my life at the goodness of the Lord, I am so thankful for the way the Lord has led me. I only wish that I had kept a journal along life’s way, as I know that I have forgotten many things. As I am writing this, I am asking the Lord to bring to my remembrance what I should share that would minister life to others.

John 14:26 NKJV “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

As a young girl, I attended the First Baptist Church in my hometown. I will forever be grateful for the foundation I had in the Word of God. It was deeply implanted in my spirit, by the Holy Spirit, that God’s way was Holy. I knew at a young age that being a Christian was not just making a confession of faith, but that it meant becoming a disciple.

John 12:25-26 NLT “Those who love their lives in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. Anyone who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.”

In the summer of 1971, my husband’s grandmother treated my husband and me and our five children to a week at a Christian Missionary Alliance (CMA) family camp. The campground was situated in the beautiful San Bernardino mountains in the small community of Idyllwild, California.

The CMA’s motto is: “Christ-Savior, Sanctifier, Healer and Coming King.” Each evening the guest speaker spoke on one of those topics. On Thursday night the message was about Christ, the Healer. I was captivated by the stories the speaker shared of various healings that had taken place in his ministry.

The one story that had the greatest impact on me was the healing of a sixteen-year-old girl who had scoliosis of the spine. She had been bent over since birth. The doctor’s had said that the only thing they could do was to operate and put some kind of an apparatus on her that would little by little straighten her spine, but it would be terribly painful. The girl’s father was an agnostic and very antagonistic towards the things of God.

The teenage girl opted to believe God, and had prayer at a special meeting one night. She knelt at the altar and, after prayer she stood up, and walked down the aisle. Her back was still bent. When she got to the last row of seats in the church she was suddenly struck by the power of God and stood up straight, totally healed!

1 Peter 2:24 NKJV “..who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed!”

The girl went home after church that night and called to her father, who was asleep upstairs in the bedroom. Her father came out of his room and when he saw his daughter standing upright for the first time in her life, he rushed down the stairs, fell on his knees and gave his life to the Lord!

At that time I did not know that the Lord still healed people today. We had never been taught about healing in the Baptist Church. But, hearing that testimony stirred my heart, and I began to get hungry for more of God. Up to this point, my husband and I were nominal Christians. Oh, we loved the Lord, but we did not realize the Lord had much more to reveal to us. That was the beginning point in our lives of sensing that the Lord was drawing us to Himself.

The following morning as we were standing in the breakfast line, we overheard a missionary from Japan sharing how the Lord had healed him the previous night. He had been suffering from a double hernia. He shared that he had gone forward for prayer and had been instantly healed. Faith began to build in my heart! Again, I was very shocked to learn that the Lord actually still healed today. I had never heard or understood this truth before! However, I knew this missionary was telling the truth and I became eager to learn more!

Just a few days before we left for camp, my husband had mentioned to me that he had some numbness in one of his hands. I had told my husband not to mention it to his Grandmother or Mother while we were at the camp or they would be worried.

Now, here it was Sunday morning, the final service at the camp and the speaker said, “If there is anyone here who has a need, spiritually or physically, do not leave without having prayer!” I nudged my husband and asked, “Why don’t you go up for prayer? You never know, God might heal you!” And, that is exactly what happened! My husband relayed later that he felt something go up his arm and out of the top of his body by his shoulder. He was healed!

We went home from that camp with our lives totally changed and with a whole new mindset! We began living, practicing and believing in the faithfulness of our God and that He is the same yesterday, today and forever! Our lives would never ever be the same again after receiving the revelation that Jesus still heals today.

Through the years the Lord has been so faithful to me, and in ensuing devotions I will share more about my life.

Psalm 118:15–17 NKJV “The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tents of the righteous; the right hand of the Lord does valiantly. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord!”

Psalm 40:10 “…I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation. KJV

Psalm 119:90 “Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.”

Psalm 89:1 “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.”

Be encouraged today that just as God has been faithful to me throughout my life, He will be faithful to you. Put your trust in Him.
