The Path of the Just is like a Shining Light

Betty Dewhirst

“The path of the just is as the shining light that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” Proverbs 4:18 KJV

When we receive the Lord into our hearts, we are justified by faith. It is all by faith. “Just” refers to God’s people and has the same meaning as righteous. When we receive Christ into our hearts and are born again, we become the Righteousness of God in Christ. Someone has said that we are “just as if we never sinned!”

The slate is wiped clean and the Word tells us that, “as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” Psalms 103.12. The burden of sin is removed and we are free to live our lives as servants of the Most High God! We are not free to sin and live as we want, but free to be a servant of the Lord! This is a great joy and privilege and will bring us into the greatest fulfillment we have ever known in life.

I had a Sunday School teacher that led me to the Lord when I was in 6th grade. I shall forever be grateful for that teacher who had a burden for her young students and shared Christ with us. The Holy Spirit brought great conviction of sin to my heart.

I am so thankful that I walked down the aisle one Sunday morning and received the Lord Jesus Christ into my heart! From the very moment that I was saved I knew that God’s way was Holy. There was so much I didn’t know, but that was one thing that was made real to me by the Holy Spirit. I knew that I wanted to serve the Lord with my whole heart !

I was raised in a wonderful family, but my parents did not know the Lord. But, being good parents they took my brother and me to Sunday School starting at a very young age. Later I was married, with 5 children, when both my parents came to the Lord!

My Dad, had lung cancer and opened his heart to the Lord just before he passed. He had lost his voice and could not even sit up or eat or anything. Yet the Lord gave us a marvelous sign! Dad had been having a breathing treatment and Mom felt that he would soon die so she asked the nurse to call my brother.

After the nurse left the room, all of a sudden my Dad sat up, dangled his feet over the edge of the bed, raised his hand toward Heaven and loudly exclaimed, “It’s all right, I’m okay now!” Then, he laid down and was gone! Mom told us later that the Presence of the Lord filled the room! What a glorious answer to our prayers!

Our God is so faithful, and He hears and answers prayer. Oh, it may not always be like we would want, but He knows what is best. I have heard it said that the Holy Spirit often prepares one for eternity through a lingering illness. Pride can be broken down in a person’s heart and a real softening can take place as the Lord draws them to Himself.

My mother had been going to church and was active in various activities but we were wondering if she had made a real commitment to the Lord in her heart. A few months before she died she had taken a trip to Israel with some of her friends and the Lord used that trip to speak to her heart in a great way! She was greatly touched by seeing the land and actually being where Jesus had walked and lived. She was only home for a short time before she became ill. I took care of Mom and she would share with me how she had been so blessed. She went to be with the Lord a few months later.

You know, the Word says in James 4:14 that our life is like a vapor.

“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

The older I get, the more I realize the truth of this. I have thought of a tea kettle with the steam coming out when the water is boiling, and how quickly the vapor is gone! So it is true, that in the light of eternity, our life on earth is very short!

I encourage you today to open your heart to the Lord if you do not know Him. God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:9 KJV “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

John 3:17 “He did not come to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

I encourage you today, to open the door of your heart and let Jesus in. It will be the best decision you have ever made. He will instruct you and guide you in the way you should go! Psalm 32:8.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain as you step out in faith and put your trust in Him. “For by Grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the Gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9.

As I have looked back over my life, I am so thankful for all the Lord has done for me! He has given me many blessings and some of my greatest ones are my 5 children, 21 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Children are a heritage of the Lord!

  1. I have always been so thankful for you and so grateful that my husband grew up in a home that loved and valued the presence of the Lord! Thank you for setting the example of being a woman who has always pursued the Lord and his presence! Love you!!

  2. Mom,
I appreciate your testimony very much. My Mom and Dad have always hungered and thirsted for righteousness and we used to spend our family vacation time at World Map Camps. (World Missionary Assistance Plan, Burbank, Ca.) Great is the faithfulness of God as the legacy of believers continue in their offspring. Truly, blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled. I am so happy that Grandpa and Grandma came to an understanding of who the Lord was for them. May all the earth be filled with his Glory in this vapor of time we have.

  3. Mom, great article… I’m very thankful to have been raised in a home that Jesus was the foundation of. You and dad always put Jesus first. In growing up, I saw many miracles, but the one that turned my heart the most and gave me a desire to follow Jesus more was when Grandpa sat up in his bed at the end of his life and Grandma experienced God’s power. You may not have known, but I was very angry as a 13 yr. old to think that God wasn’t healing Grandpa after I’d prayed for his healing. When we arrived for the funeral, I was still angry but then Grandma shared what happened in the hospital room. I was in awe at the love of Jesus for Grandpa. The first change of many changes in my life. The love of Jesus doesn’t just focus on those who “know,” him, but is for all who are lost and need the love of the Father. We are the ones He uses to demonstrate that love. I also learned that in my home and it went to my heart. I love you, Mom.
