Malian military troops have begun firing on Islamists in the center part of the country as the extremists attempted to move on government controlled parts of the country according to BBC sources.
The troops used artillery against the extremists who control the village of Gnimignama. Government forces have not reported the total number of casualties.
The Islamic extremists took control of parts of northern Mali following a military coup in March 2012. They have forced an extremely brutal version of Sharia Law on all citizens regardless of their faith and have killed thousands of civilians in maintaining their control.
The UN Security Council last month gave backing for an African-led military operation to remove the Islamists from the country but the force is not believed to be ready for action until September 2013.
