Trust in God

Sharon Couchman

Trust as defined in the dictionary and thesaurus means —

“to rely on somebody or something, to place confidence in somebody or someone’s good qualities, especially fairness, truth, honor or ability, having confidence that the person will behave responsibly or properly, to place somebody or something in the care of another person, to hope, depend upon, have faith in, count on.”

Who can you trust in your life? Is there anyone? What about God? Do you struggle with doubts when it comes to trusting God or what He promises in His Word? If your answer is yes, you are not alone! Trusting God is a major issue for many people today.

In our society many relationships are formed and broken at an alarming rate. Wrong perceptions have been adopted and many have a mindset of “drive thru” thinking, meaning that everything should work out fast and easy like the half-hour TV shows. But that isn’t real life! Unfortunately, we have often transferred this impatient attitude to our expectations of the Lord. We want our prayers answered quickly and when they aren’t, we can potentially become discouraged and start to mistrust God.

Are some prayers answered speedily? Of course! In my own life there have been many quick answers to prayer. It is wonderful when this happens. Other prayers require a longer waiting period before the answer appears. During these seasons our faith is working and our trust in the Lord is being developed. When we first pray in faith believing, God begins working behind the scenes before we ever see the manifestation of our answered prayer.

Trust is the real issue here. All of us (if we have lived any length of time on the earth) have experienced betrayal and broken relationships. Perhaps a close friend broke promise after promise. Maybe you were betrayed or falsely accused by a family member. Betrayals are everywhere — in politics, the workplace, churches, schools and our personal life.

Broken promises, accusations and disappointments with friends or relatives often affect our perception of God the Father. Childhood memories of abusive parents or authority figures can make it more difficult to trust. If you were blessed with a nurturing mother or father, then it is usually easier to relate to the goodness of our Heavenly Father.

The truth is that we can’t keep blaming someone else for our distrust of God. All of us have been given the ability to choose what we believe. It was with child-like faith that we accepted Jesus as our Savior. With that same ability you can choose to believe that God is a good God. Friend, be totally honest with God. Confess to Him that you are having difficulty believing and trusting and ask for His help. He knows all of this anyway, but we are to humble ourselves and ask for His assistance. The Lord’s understands our fears and He assures us that He is NOT a liar, that He is a God of truth and a promise keeper. Only God fulfills every one of the descriptions of a trustworthy person. Put your trust in God!

Look to Jesus – He is the best example. He came to this Earth to show us Father’s Heart. What Jesus did was based up what He saw God the Father in Heaven doing, or what He heard the Father saying. Jesus told His disciples that if they had seen Him, they had seen the Father in Heaven. Jesus never broke His promises, He always did what He said He would do.

Numbers 23:19 – “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” (KJV)

John 14:9—“Jesus saith…he that hath seen me hath seen the Father…”

John 5:19-20 — “…I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”

John 12:49—“For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.”

What does God have to say about trusting Him?

Psalm 37:3—“Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.”

Psalm 62:8—“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

Psalm 115:11—“You who fear him, trust in the Lord — he is their help and shield.”

Psalm 118:8—“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.”

Proverbs 3:5-6—“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Psalm 40:1– “Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust…”

John 14:1–“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God..”

Nahum 1:7—“The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”

Proverbs 29:25—“The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.”

Psalm 118:8–“It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.”

Romans 15:13—“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

“Lord, I ask you to help us trust you more than ever before. I pray that each of us one will come to know you as the good and loving God that you are. May we entrust you with every area of our life. You are the All-Knowing and All-Powerful God, yet you care for each one of us individually. When everything is falling apart, and there is no one else around, we can still turn to You and know that You love us and will always be there to help. You promised in your Word that You are a very present help in trouble and we choose to trust and believe you. (Psalm 46:1) David said in Psalm 56:3–“When I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” And so will we!

In Jesus’ Name, Amen!!”

  1. Thank you for reminding me to look to God not man. I was thinking about this very thing this last week and that I need to stay close to God and look to Him for all things not man.
