Over 260,000 homes in the Dallas area were without power on Friday morning after a major ice storm coated trees and power lines.
A meteorologist with Accuweather wrote that it could be the worst ice storm to hit the United States in years.
Operations Director for Entergy Mississippi, which serves 700,000 customers in Arkansas, said that power restoration for all customers who could potentially lose power would run up to seven days.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency issued a state of emergency for crews to mobile for the storm. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe has declared a statewide emergency allowing crews extra powers to repair downed lines and damage to trees.
Up to 8 inches of snow is predicted for southern Missouri.
About 1,000 flights across the U.S. have been canceled on Friday including almost 700 in Dallas-Fort Worth.
Fifty-two teenage girls were celebrated in a mass baby shower for their decisions to have their children instead of killing them through abortion.
Texas-based Embrace Grace held the event last month after the girls attended a series of classes by the group that provides emotional, practical and spiritual support for girls experiencing unplanned pregnancies.
“Several of the girls in all of our classes are sometimes on the fence regarding abortion, but once they come to one of our classes and see the support that there is, that their immediate needs for the baby are covered and that they don’t have to walk this road alone, they usually change their mind and keep their baby,” Embrace Grace founder Amy Ford told the Christian Post.
Ford said that many of the girls who enter the Embrace Grace program are not church goers but give their lives to Christ after experiencing the blessings of strangers showing them unconditional love and support.
“We provide a curriculum and resources for the church to implement the program as well as offer sponsorship for the churches that may not be able to afford the expenses involved with helping young women with crisis pregnancies,” said Ford. “If the church, the body of Christ, would join together to support these girls that choose life, young moms will be more open to not abort their baby.”
A US Airways Express flight from Texas to Arizona ended up being more dramatic than passengers had expected when they boarded.
First responders boarded the plane upon landing in Phoenix and removed a man who was told to put on a medical mask. A spokesman for US Airways said the airline was notified after the plane left Austin the passenger’s status had been changed to “no-fly” because of medical conditions.
Passengers told Fox News they were told to get tuberculosis tests and vaccinations by a first responder who boarded the plane while it was on the tarmac. Federal and Maricopa County health officials said they had no immediate confirmation the passenger had an infectious disease.
However, a spokeswoman for the Maricopa County Department of Public Health told ABC15 passengers “faced little risk of contagion.”
Tuberculosis can be spread through the air.
The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal from pro-abortionists to stay Texas’ new abortion law pending an appeal.
The justices ruled 5-4 to leave in effect provisions banning abortions after 20 weeks and requiring doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.
The four liberal justices who wanted to stop the law that Texas officials say is aimed to protect the health of women seeking abortions said they expect the law to return to the Court once a final ruling is issued by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
A judge had blocked the law days before it was to take effect but was overruled by a three-judge appellate panel. Judge Priscilla Owen said that Texas law would not end abortion; only force women to drive a greater distance to obtain one, and that did not pose an “undue burden” on the women.
“This is good news both for the unborn and for the women of Texas, who are now better protected from shoddy abortion providers operating in dangerous conditions,” Texas Governor Rick Perry told reporters. “As always, Texas will continue doing everything we can to protect the culture of life in our state.”
Tiny black insects have taken over parts of Tarrant County, Texas leaving residents wondering where they came from and when they will leave.
The bugs, called hackberry nipple-gall makers, are looking for a warm spot to spend the winter according to an etymologist with Texas A&M. The insects are so small that they can pass through many common window and door screens and also cracks in siding, paint and windowsills.
The bugs traditionally hide within tree bark but cannot distinguish the difference between the warmth under tree bark and the wood of someone’s home.
Pest control experts say that while the bugs don’t bite or sting, they can swarm which makes them annoying. They can get easily get into cars through air vents and are so small they can get into nasal passages and ear canals.
The bugs are also a nuisance because once they get into a car or home, they tend to die quickly and can pile up on surfaces. Experts say the best thing to do if you find the bugs in your home is to vacuum them up.
Rachel Poole, the Texas woman who was beaten and stabbed while on a FaceTime video chat with her soldier husband who was in Afghanistan, has given birth to a healthy baby girl.
Isabella Poole was born via caesarean section at University Medical Center in El Paso.
31-year-old Rachel Poole was attacked in her home Wednesday night while chatting with her deployed husband. The assailant, Cory Moss, stabbed Rachel with a knife and then beat her severely. She suffered stab wounds, a collapsed lung, dislocated vertebrae and broken bones in her eye socket from the brutal attack. She is unable to see out of one of her eyes.
Moss reportedly owed the Poole’s money for car repairs because he had borrowed one of their cars and wrecked it.
Justin Poole was able to reach Moss’ co-workers at Fort Bliss who captured and held him until police arrived on base. Moss is facing charges of criminal attempted capital murder.
Rachel Poole remains in critical condition at University Medical Center. Her family would not release her prognosis to the press.
A federal judge struck down key parts of a law in Texas aimed at improving health conditions for women seeking to end their child’s life via abortion.
U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel blocked the part of the law that requires doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital because it “places a substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion of a nonviable fetus and is thus an undue burden to her.”
The judge also blocked a part of the law that deals with medication-induced abortions but allowed restrictions to remain. The provisions include requiring the drugs to be used in strict compliance with FDA requirements and making follow up visits mandatory.
Pro-life groups said that the blockage of the law puts women’s lives in danger.
“Blocking this law only puts vulnerable women in greater danger. We are very disturbed that a judge would partially block a law that is grounded in the latest science and in common sense,” Anna Higgins of the Family Research Council told CNN.
Anti-life activists are creating a video game where the goal is for a woman to kill her baby via abortion through the crowd-funding site “Indiegogo”.
The game is titled “Choice: Texas, A Very Serious Game” and is in the developmental stages by a professor at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and an activist poet living in Austin, Texas. Continue reading →
Pro-abortion enthusiasts were caught with jars filled with urine, feces and paint as they tried to sneak into the gallery of the Texas State Senate to disrupt the debate on Texas’ new abortion restrictions.
In addition to the attempt to bring projectiles into the chamber, several abortion supporters tried to chain themselves to the railing in an attempt to keep the chamber from being able to vote on the measure. Continue reading →
