Somali citizens are fleeing the city of Kismayo, the key stronghold of the Islamist group al-Shabab, as government forces close in on the city and defeat major pockets of terrorist resistance.

The University of Texas was evacuated Friday morning after a man with a middle-eastern accent called the school claiming to be with Al-Qaeda and said he had planted bombs throughout the campus.
The call arrived around 8:35 a.m. with a warning the bombs would go off in 90 minutes. University officials posted a message on the campus’ emergency alert website at 9:53 a.m. telling people to “immediately evacuate ALL buildings and get as far away as possible.” Continue reading →
A homicide bomber attacked a hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia in an attempt to assassinate the country’s new President who had been staying at the hotel.
The bomber and four of the President’s security team were killed during the attack.

The second in command of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has been killed in an operation lead by Yemeni government forces.
Said al-Shihri, a Saudi Arabian national released by the US from Guantanamo Bay in 2007, was reportedly killed by a strike from a US drone along with six other terrorists. Al-Qaeda affiliated group Boko Haram is targeting the mobile telephone system in Nigeria claiming that the system is being used by the government to track their members.
Assaults on all 24 destroyed towers were accompanied with armed assaults on villagers and local police. Attacks happened throughout the country from the port city of Lagos in the south, Potiskum in the north and the capital city of Abuja. The damage is estimated in the millions of dollars. Yemeni government officials announced that al-Qaeda is responsible for a homicide bombing this weekend that killed 45 people and injured dozens.
