A series of bombings targeting Muslims preparing for the end of Ramadan have killed at least 42 and wounded 130.
The attacks struck at opposite ends of the country and were clearly aimed at civilians.
Four homicide bombers killed 30 in the market areas of the city of Zaranj. Intelligence officials in Zaranj told the BBC that they have arrested several other homicide bombers and said as many at 14 may be in the city. Seven people have been killed and dozens wounded in a homicide bomb attack in Kandahar, Agfhanistan.
The attack happened in front Kandahar University about a mile from the former compound of Taliban leader Mullah Omar. The former Al-Qaeda base is now a major base used by US Special Forces operating in the country. Continue reading →
Taliban terrorists attacked a hotel in the Lake Qargha area of Afghanistan killing 15 civilians.
The five insurgents who engaged in the 12-hour attack were killed.
The BBC reports the hotel outside Kabul was an “easy target” for the Taliban because of its remote location. They said that little security could be found in that region. Continue reading →
Three NATO soldiers and a local interpreter were among 21 killed when a homicide bomber attacked a joint NATO-Afghan military checkpoint. The bomber drove a motorcycle covered in explosives into a bazaar near the checkpoint.

Baghlan governor Munshi Majeed told the BBC that more than 80 people have been killed in a massive landslide caused by twin earthquakes in Afghanistan on Monday.

The numbers of deaths are expected to rise as more reports come in from areas in Afghanistan devastated by a pair of weekend earthquakes. The 5.4 and 5.7 quakes were located a few miles apart and struck within a minute of each other on Monday morning. Landslides buried or destroyed at least 20 village homes.

Seven people were killed and thirteen injured when a homicide bomber attacked a governor’s compound in western Afghanistan.
The attack in Farah province also resulted in the deaths of four of the attackers. The first blew himself up at the gate and others tried to fight their way through the gate into the compound.

A former Taliban minister who had been a go-between in potential peace talks was assassinated as he headed toward a meeting with the government about reconciliation.
Mullah Arsaia Rahmani had been living in Kabul under protection from the Afghan Intelligence Service. He died when a gunman approached his car and opened fire. The assassin escaped according to another member of the Council.
