The U.K. Is preparing a resolution to submit to the U.N. Security Council opening the door to possible military intervention against the al-Assad government for use of chemical weapons on civilians.
Prime Minister David Cameron said Britain’s National Security Council had unanimously supported action against Syria. The resolution will be presented today at a meeting of the five permanent members of the Security Council.
U.N. weapons experts have said they will need at least four days to investigate the incident and longer to report their findings according to U.N. General Secretary Ban Ki-moon, who also called on the five permanent Security Council members to act together.
“The body interested in maintaining international peace and security cannot be ‘missing in action’,” he said. “The council must at last find the unity to act. It must use its authority for peace.”
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that U.S. or western intervention in Syria would be detrimental to the middle east.
“The region is like a gunpowder store and the future cannot be predicted,” he told Iran’s state news agency.
The inspectors will be on site again today after having to leave Tuesday because of security concerns according to the BBC.
