Tens of thousands marched on Cairo’s Tahrir Square and other cities calling for Islamic president Mohammed Morsi to be removed from office on the one-year anniversary of his inauguration.
Chants of “erhal!” (meaning “leave!”) rang out in the square. Islamist groups vowed to do anything it would take to keep Morsi in office.
The Muslim Brotherhood has been claiming the protests are nothing more than Mubarak supporters trying to overthrow the “duly elected” government. They claim that the problems of the past year are efforts of sabotage. Several members have said anyone opposing Morsi is an “enemy of God” and infidel.
“I came here today because Morsi did not accomplish any of the (2011) revolution’s goals. I don’t need anything for myself, but the needs of the poor were not met,” a protester told the Associated Press.
“”If he is so sure of his popularity why doesn’t he want to organize early elections? If he wins it, we will tell the opposition to shut up,” Mohammed Abdel-Salam, another protestor, told the AP.
Morsi said in weekend interviews he would not call for early elections.
