Record Losses Pending For Michigan Fruit Growers

Rev 6:6 NAS And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not damage the oil and the wine."

“Although the United States remains the breadbasket of the world, a drought, heat wave, or changing weather patterns in the U.S, could have devastating effects throughout the global food supply.”

The USDA is reporting that Michigan farmers could lose almost 95% some crops because of the unusually warm March weather.

The biggest blow will be to apple growers who will suffer a 90% loss totaling $110 million dollars. Peach growers will face losses of 95% totaling over $14 million.

The USDA states the total losses in 2012 will total $223.5 million. The five year average combined value of the Michigan fruit crop is $359.6 million…meaning farmers will face a blow equal to 62% of their five year average value.

“We’ve had freezes before but you’d always have something come through OK,” Oceana County grower David Rabe told the Detroit News. “This year just about everything’s devastated.”
