Mohammed al-Beltagi, the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood’s “Freedom and Justice Party”, has been arrested by state officials in Egypt and charged with inciting violence.
Former labor minister Khaled al-Azhari was also arrested on Thursday.
Egyptian prosecutors had issued a warrant for al-Beltagi’s arrest on July 10th but the man in charge of the Brotherhood’s political wing continued to appear daily at protest camps in Cairo. A former member of parliament, he gave rousing speeches from stages calling for their supporters to resist all government actions until they were returned to power.
Al-Beltagi’s 17-year-old daughter Asmaa died in one of the protest camps when military and police dispersed their protests earlier this month.
The interim government has declared the Muslim Brotherhood a “terrorist organization” and have hundreds of leading members in custody. However, the Brotherhood is expected to stage a major protest on Friday against the detention of their leaders and in support of Mohammed Morsi.
