In 2000, a French TV station aired a news report that claimed Israeli forces had shot and killed a 12-year-old Palestinian boy as his father tried to shield him.
The video aired by France 2 showed a gun battle between Israeli and Palestinian forces that had 12-year-old Mohammed al-Dura and his father caught in the crossfire. At the end of the video a body was shown that appeared to be Mohammed al-Dura. The video went around the world and drew condemnation of Israel from all major governments.
After an investigation, the full original video was discovered that showed the boy was still alive after the firefight. France 2 chose not to air that part of the footage.
“It is important to focus on this incident – which has slandered Israel’s reputation,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. “This is a manifestation of the ongoing, mendacious campaign to delegitimize Israel. There is only one way to counter lies, and that is through the truth,” he said.
The video shows that the boy and his father were not even harmed in the crossfire.
