Syrian opposition leaders say the government launched a chemical weapons attack overnight, killing entirely families while they slept. An official death toll has not been released but most activist groups place the number of dead in the hundreds.

The toxic attack was launched in the suburbs of the Ghouta region as part of an assault on rebel forces according to the BBC.

Several videos from the scene have shown a clinic floor covered in bodies, including small children, with no visible wounds. However, the bodies had foaming at the mouth and other indicators of death by chemical weapon.

“We don’t have the capability to treat all this number of people,” Dr. Ghazwan Bwidany told the BBC. “We’re putting them in mosques, in schools. We are lacking medical supplies now, especially atropine, which is the antidote for chemical weapons.”

The U.S., U.K. and France have all called for the UN weapons inspectors currently in Syria to rush to the site of the attack and investigate. The Arab League and European Union have also called for the inspectors to investigate.

The government claims the videos are fakes.

“It also cannot be totally excluded that the whole video is political staging,” Professor Alexander Kekule of the Institute for Medical Microbiology at Halle University told the BBC. “In this case, however, it would be a very good one. Taken together, the best guess is that this is an authentic video of the aftermath of an attack with some incapacitating chemical agent.”
