Al-Qaeda Linked Syrian Rebel Group Attacks Christian Town

John 16:2 Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

A Syrian rebel group with connections to the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda attacked the historically Christian village of Maaloula Wednesday starting with a homicide bomber from the Jabhat al-Nusra group blowing himself up at a government checkpoint according to the Observatory for Human Rights.

The rebels then seized the checkpoint and a mountaintop hotel that was used as a base to bomb Christian churches throughout the town. A Jewish temple was also damaged in the bombing assault.

Residents of the town fled their homes to a convent in the town in an attempt to escape the attack. A local nun told the Associated Press they had evacuated the convent’s orphans to nearby caves for protection.

Rebels then left the town Thursday following their bombing campaign.

Maaloula’s Christian history traces back to Biblical times and the residents speak Aramaic, the language believed to have been spoken by Christ.

  1. His people perish because of a lack of faith, lack of wisdom and knowledge,a lack of courage-the fearful ain’t going, doubt and unbelief and a hardened heart.
It sounds as though the Maaloula people have been perhaps living in a safe cocoon for a time. It may have been a false sense of security or it may have been that they have fallen from grace and Satan saw an opportunity and took it.
This is not meant to be a criticism, just an observation. One would think that having been a Christian city for that long that they would know how to stand against the wiles of the Devil.
It reminds me of how our country started. It is just a small picture of the United States. If it can happen to a city, it can happen to a country. This is what can happen if God remove His hand of protection.
