African Union Launches Anti-Extremist Offensive

Luke 21:9-10: [Jesus said] "When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away." Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom."

Kenya’s military reports that African Union forces have launched an assault and control large parts of Kismayo, the biggest city still held by Islamic extremists. Operation “Sledge Hammer” launched at 2 a.m. local time.

Local witnesses told the Associated Press that the troops captured the port but that Al-Qaeda related extremists from Al-Shabab controlled other parts of the city. The city is the major source of revenue for the terrorist group as they assess “taxes” on all imported items.

More than 10,000 civilians have fled the city in light of the assault.

The country recently elected a new president and parliament is close to naming a prime minister. Al-Shabab, who wants to install Sharia Law on the nation, recently lost the support of the country’s other major Islamic political group who is supporting the new election process.

The action was being undertaken without the support of American military advisors who had been helping the African Union troops through the United Nations.
