7.4 Earthquake hits Guatemala

The USGS reports that a 7.4 earthquake has hit off the Pacific Coast of Guatemala, 28 miles southwest of Champerico.

Witnesses told sources that buildings shook in Guatemala City and San Salvador. The quake could be felt as far away as Mexico City. Buildings were evacuated and rescue workers were on alert.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated there was a possibility of a local tsunami. There are currently no reports of injury related to this earthquake.

Update 11/7/2012  (2:45 p.m.) At least 15 people have been confirmed dead.

Update 11/8/2012 (4:04 p.m.) Deathrises to 52; at least 22 still missing or presumed dead.
