Two Colorado State University climatologists who have been predicting hurricane seasons for years are telling coastal residents to prepare for a turbulent few months.
Phil Klotzbach and William Gray are predicting 18 named storms, 9 of them hurricanes and at least four of them major hurricanes. The average for a storm season is 12 named storms with six hurricanes, 3 major.
The two men have been correct four of the last five storm seasons in predicting the level of storm activity.
The major factor is that El Nino is unlikely to appear this hurricane season. Jeff Masters, chief meteorologist of Weather Underground, said that the last time an El Nino neutral storm season happened in 2005 there were 28 storms and 15 hurricanes.
Klotzback and Gray put the odds of one major hurricane striking the U.S. East Coast at close to 50 percent.
