Time to Possess the Land

Joshua 1:1-7

Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spoke unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying, "Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory. There shall not any man be able to stand before you all the days of your life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with you: I will not fail you, nor forsake you. Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shall you divide for an inheritance the land, which I swore unto their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous..."

In Joshua chapter 1, we read about the account of Joshua receiving instructions from the Lord to go into the land He had given them and to “possess” it.  That word, “possess”  in Hebrew is yarash or yaresh and it means to take possession of, inherit, dispossess.  The connotation here is that God gave the Israelites the land, but they had to first cross the Jordan River, and second, fight for it.

“Taking the land” has been a common theme in Christian teaching and preaching, but never has it been more applicable than in these treacherous times we are living in and will be facing in the coming years.

If you haven’t noticed already, the spiritual warfare necessary to do anything at all for God has reached a new intensity.  If we are to accomplish the things which the Lord have given for us to do, it will take a new level of resolve and spiritual strength – not natural strength.

These battles to “possess” the land cannot be fought in our own strength.  They must be fought in the power and strength of the Lord’s might, and His will and purpose for giving us the land in the first place.  If you try to do something in your own strength that isn’t in the plan of God, you can be sure that it will backfire and you may be left bruised and bloody, wondering what went wrong.

The first step in any battle plan is to “know that you know” that it’s the Lord’s will.  If you “know that you know” He has given you the land, then there is no journey too difficult, or battle too hard to fight in order for you to “possess” the land, because He will be with you and He will anoint you for the struggle.  The kingdom of heaven is ours when we give up our own will to accomplish His will.

As we see the Revelation Days unfolding, it’s not time to shirk back or give up and just wait for Jesus to return. No!  It’s time to finish what He has given us to do and it’s time to “possess” the land.

  1. Dear Jim, Do you believe Revelation 11 is calling for two witnessess to go to Jerusalem, to defend the Ten Commandments and give the testimony of Jesus, “Neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more?” Do we know “sin” is the transgression of Gods Law, for a Christian, is both Jew and Gentile, subject to The Law and Prophets of God?

  2. My longtime friend, Rabbi Jeremiah Lexier from Winnipeg just shared with me during the recent 8 day war between Israel and the Hamas on the Gaza that he believes it is a time for the JERICHO MARCH and the story of Joshua to take place between Israel and her enemy in the Gaza. He also shared that a friend had had a vision seeing three series of 8’s in smoke above Israel. I believe that the first 8 was the 8 days that Israel stood with their soldiers at the ready; the second 8 is about Daniel 8 and our current time; has it been 8 days since the 24 hr calm until the UN allowed an illegal Palestinian state? I am a Canadian and very proud of our government for standing with Israel.

  3. Time to Possess the Land
    Joshua chapter 1
    Dear Sir,
Thank you for these wise words which come from the book of Joshua in the old testament.
We can certainly possess that promised land with the help of Jesus in our midst.
Joshua chapter 1 finishes with …Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage…(KJV).
Sir, with our faith in the lord Jesus and our love for him, then and only then do we become strong and of good courage, enabling us to take possession of the promised land.
Thank you Jesus, where we put our whole trust in your hands.
    Amen.
Thank you sir for your good ministry.
    Kind regards,
