Authorities say that many Dutch citizens who have been fighting in the war are returning to the country “more radicalized” and that threatens the national security.
The level raised from “limited” to “substantial”, the second highest category in the Dutch system.
“The chance of an attack in the Netherlands or against Dutch interests abroad has risen,” Dick Shoof, National Coordinator for Security and Counter-terrorism, wrote in a media statement. “These jihadist travelers can return to the Netherlands highly radicalized, traumatized and with a strong desire to commit violence, thus posing a significant threat to this country.”
The government also noted a rise in radicalization among young Dutch who stayed in the country versus joining the rebellion in Syria.
Shoof said that the nearly 100 people who the government knows fought in Middle East conflicts are being monitored by security personnel.
