The UN Security Council has authorized a military force led by African troops to enter Northern Mali in an attempt to remove Islamic extremists who have gained control of that part of the country.
The council gave the force a one-year mandate to remove the terrorists. However, the force could have their mandate renewed should they not succeed in that initial year.
Al-Qaeda linked groups seized control of northern Mali after a March military coup and has imposed an extreme version of Sharia Law. Over 3,000 troops are already set to go into an action from various African nations but leaders say it’s not likely a full assault can begin until at least September 2013.
A UN report leaked to the press warned that 400,000 people could end up homeless because of the military assault. However, UN leaders feel this is the only real option to remove the Islamic terrorists.
