The state department has ruled all non-essential personnel must leave Lebanon and any staff in southern Turkey can voluntarily leave due to “current tensions within the region.”
The state department also said that U.S. citizens in the area need to remain alert because they are in “potential danger.”
“Given the current tensions the region, as well as potential threats to US government facilities and personnel, we are taking these steps out of an abundance of caution to protect our employees and their families, and local employees and visitors to our facilities,” state department spokeswoman Marie Harf said in a statement.
No specific threats were named to the U.S. embassy in Beirut or Adana, Turkey.
The evacuation comes less than a month after embassies in the region were closed because of potential terror attacks by al-Qaeda related groups.
