Typhoon Usagi Death Toll Rises

The death toll from Typhoon Usagi in China has jumped to 25 as officials are able to access more areas cut off because of flood waters and damage from the super typhoon.

The dead were either killed by flying debris or drowned in the flash flooding created by the storm.

Officials say that 3.5 million Chinese citizens have been impacted in some way by the massive storm. Train service throughout southern China has been suspended and hundreds of flights from airports have been canceled due to storm damage.

Power throughout the Guangdong province has been cut off and Xinhua news agency is reporting over 50,000 relief workers have been sent to the region.

At least 7,100 homes have been destroyed by the storm. Xinhua reported the current economic loss is passing 3.24 billion yuan ($526m U.S.).

The death tolls in neighboring countries is also rising as officials take stock following the storm. The Philippines now say at least 18 are confirmed dead from floods and landslides.
