At least 17 people are dead after a roadside bomb destroyed a civilian transport in western Afghanistan. 16 of the confirmed dead are women and children.
Ten of the dead are from the same famliy. They were riding in a trailer being pulled by a motorcycle which is a common civilian transport in the Herat region.
The Taliban is being blamed for the bomb believing it was originally set to kill Afghan troops. The Taliban has killed hundreds of civilians over the last two years using improvised explosive devices. The BBC reports the latest attack is showing the Taliban having a resurgence in the region concerning their ability to kill and destroy.
The Taliban has been targeting civilians for the last year. In November, 37 died in two separate bomb attacks on wedding parties. Last week, 10 civilians including 8 women, were killed in Kandahar in an attack very similar to today’s Herat bombing.
