Tuesday’s massive 7.8 earthquake in Pakistan has resulted in the very rare development of a new island.

According to officials near the Gwadar coast the island is close to 40 feet high and around 100 feet wide. The island emerged from the ocean about 350 feet off the Gwadar coast.

The quake has resulted in at least 50 deaths according to local officials. Hundreds have been injured and thousands of homes have been destroyed. The residents of the region lived mostly in mud houses that are unstable.

Abdul Qadoos, deputy speaker of the Balochistan assembly, told Reuters that over 30% of the homes in the Awaran district have collapsed.

The same region was struck by another quake in April that killed 35 people.
