Japan, the third-largest economy in the world, is undergoing a $116 billion stimulus package in an attempt to stop a recession.
Japan’s economy contracted for the second quarter in a row due to a decrease in demand for Japanese products from major importers. The damage from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami has also crushed local economies forcing the federal government to take over many items including education and social security.
Recessions in the U.S. and Eurozone have driven down Japan’s exports. However, Japan’s biggest trade partner is China. The two countries have been embroiled in political conflict that has resulted in China importing less goods from Japan.
Experts say that unless Japan can mend their relationship with China, the stimulus could end up not creating the desired economic effect. Japan cannot depend on a rebounding economy in the U.S. or Eurozone to help their economic situation.
