The United Arab Emirates has announced that 68 Islamic extremists have been jailed for at least seven years after being convicted in a plot to overthrow the government.
The defendants are connected to al-Isiah, an Islamist group based in the Emirates that is linked to the Muslim Brotherhood who lead the Egyptian revolution. They were accused of “seeking to oppose the basic principles of the UAE system of government and to seize power.”
The defendants sang Islamic songs and chanted “God is great” as they were being sentenced by the court.
Human rights advocates say the trial was unfair and that some inmates were tortured. The prisoners also have no right to appeal their sentences.
