India officials have listed the latest confirmed deaths from widespread flooding in the northern part of the nation at 70. Hundreds are still missing after heavy rains have washed buildings into the rivers along with cars and heavy equipment.
In addition to thousands being forced to leave their homes, officials say at least 75,000 people on a religious pilgrimage are trapped in the region because flooding has cut off all roads to the southern part of the country.
In Uttarakhand, the flood water was so intense it swept away a stationary helicopter.
Water rescues continue for the third straight day in some parts of the country. At least 57 people were rescued Monday from the roofs of homes and apartment complexes. Officials say relief camps have been set up for the tens of thousands now without homes.
Heavy rain is forecasted to continue throughout the region. The Ganges river, which has already swept away an apartment complex in flood waters, is expected to pass what officials call “the danger mark”.
