The Indian government has launched a massive rescue operation to save survivors in Uttarakhand state where at least 150 are now confirmed dead.
State Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna called the flooding a “Himalayan tsunami”. Officials estimated the number of dead could be well over 1,000 but it will be impossible to get a total until after they can survey the entire region.
Witnesses say bodies are all around the region including at a historical Hindu temple in Kedarnath. Thousands of pilgrims were at the temple when the flooding and landslides struck and many are still stranded.
“[The shrine is] submerged in mud and slush,” local police chief Ajay Chadha said. He said that at least 50,000 people are still stranded awaiting military rescue.
Officials say that bad weather has been hampering the rescue efforts but they have been able to continue during breaks in rain. An aid package of $170 million is being rushed through the government.
