Hurricane Barbara made landfall near Salina Cruz in southern Mexico and has been hammering the country with heavy rain.
Barbara is a category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.
The hurricane formed over the Pacific Ocean over the last few days and according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center could bring up to 20 inches of rain to cities in its path. Storm surges of five feet above normal levels are expected in coastal cities.
Salina Cruz is the home to Mexico’s largest oil refinery. There have been no reports of damage to the refinery, however many communications lines are down in the region.
The hurricane followed a second storm that caused flooding in coastal areas including the resort city of Acapulco. Sea traffic in the area is suspended.
The NHC expects the storm to lose strength over the next 24 hours.
