The Islamic terrorist group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The attempted assassination failed because a minibus drove between the terrorists and the vehicle carrying intelligence head Khalif Ahmed Ilig. Ilig was injured in the attack.
The majority of the dead are civilians who were in the minibus.
Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon called the attack “cowardly.” The bombing damaged buildings surrounding the bombing site like restaurants but not the Presidential Palace that was 300 feet away.
