Editor’s Note: The Bible portrays a picture of a rebellious last days people that would not repent of their sins, including the sin of sorcery. Pharmakeia is the Greek word translated “sorceries, sorcery, or magic spells” which in today’s society all involve the use of illegal mind-altering drugs. As the use of these drugs increase, the abject evil associated with them increases as well. Just as the signs of the times in Matthew 24 are increasing in frequency and intensity, so is the outflow of effects from a 21st century drug-crazed society.
A 17-year-old started foaming at the mouth, slamming his head on the floor and convulsing at a McDonald’s. Two hours later, he was dead. His 18-year-old friend has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
In another part of the same town the night before, an 18-year-old was found dead, face down on a sidewalk.
Both had been killed by an overdose of a drug with a street name of “smiles.”
The drug in scientific circles as 2C-I, one of the 2C family of drugs discovered by Alexander Shulgin who wrote several books and articles that teach people how to create illegal substances like ecstasy and methamphetamine. DEA agents have stated Shulgin’s books have been found in almost every raided drug laboratory.
2C-I was not classified as an illegal substance until July 2012 by the DEA. That means all drugs made and sold before that date were legal to buy, sell and use. There is no way to know how much of the drug was created and sold before it was designated as a “Schedule I Controlled Substance.”
A toxicologist at the University of Michigan said the drug is similar to a class of drugs called phenylethylamines that are related to amphetamines. The drug increases heart rate and causes the heart to beat out of rhythm, which can cause fatal heart attacks.
Synthetic drug use has been on the rise in recent years like the “bath salts” which led to cannibal style attacks in southern Florida.
The DEA is also warning that in many cases of synthetic drugs, it’s impossible for buyers and users to know exactly what form of drug they will be taking. For example, in 2009 two people died from an overdose from a drug that was close to their desired drug but was significantly more potent.
“Until they’re tested,” DEA spokesman Michael Rothermund told LiveScience, “you really don’t know what you’re buying.”
There are other 2C class drugs and other synthetic drugs that have not yet been classified as illegal by the DEA or state governments.
