Costa Rica was rocked by a 6.5 earthquake Tuesday that drove residents into the streets of the country’s capital city.

The 6.5 magnitude quake struck about five miles from the tourist destination of Nicoya according to the US Geological Survey.

“The sound was deafening,” Alberto Canales, receptionist at the Hotel Riu Guanacaste in Matapalo told the Associated Press. “I’m shaken but it doesn’t feel close to how it sounds like.”

In the capital of San Jose, 125 miles from the quake’s epicenter, people ran from buildings into the streets out of fear the buildings would be shaken down. Costa Rica’s National Commission for Emergencies has stated that no serious damage or deaths have been reported as a result of the quake.

The USGS said the quake is possibly an aftershock from the 6.5 major quake that struck the region on September 5th.
