Authorities now say at least 12 people are dead as a result of the gun attack at the Washington Navy Yard Monday morning.
The FBI has taken charge of the investigation and has already cleared one man who initially was called a suspect in the shootings.
The targeted building was part of the headquarters for Naval Sea Systems Command. The outfit buys, builds and maintains ships, subs and the on-board combat systems. Most of the employees are civilians.
Witnesses in the building say a gunman perched on a fourth-floor overlook and opened fired on a first-floor cafeteria area. A gunman also fired at people in a third floor hallway, although authorities can’t say if it was a different shooter.
Hospital officials would not comment on the details of the wounded but said that at least three people, including one police officer, were in critical condition at Washington Hospital Center.
