Yemeni government officials announced that al-Qaeda is responsible for a homicide bombing this weekend that killed 45 people and injured dozens.
The homicide bomber walked into a funeral in the city of Jaar and detonated his explosive belt. The service was conducted by a group of tribal militiamen who have supported the Yemeni military in their attempts to eliminate al-Qaeda in the nation.
The BBC reported witnesses said the force of the explosion was so powerful that it literally sent bodies flying through the air. Local governor Jamal al-Aqai called the attack “criminal and cowardly” and said that an investigation is being launched into the attack.
Al-Qaeda has tried to take advantage of a security weakness in the country during protests against the former president of the nation. Current President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi has voted to “crush” the militants in the country. Civilian militias have teamed with government forces to drive the terrorist organization out of the southern part of the country.
