The number of unemployment in the Eurozone fell during June for the first time in over two years although the overall unemployment rate did not change.
The jobless total of 19.26 million was 24,000 less than last month, the first fall since April 2011. The overall unemployment rate held at a record 12.1%.
The jobless rates in the zone ranged from highs of 26.9% in Greece and 26.3% in Spain to 4.6% in Austria and 5.4% in Germany.
The news of the unemployment dip comes a week after the Eurozone’s Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 50.4 in July. Any figure above 50 indicates expansion and the level marks an 18-month high.
However, the news wasn’t thrilling all analysts.
“We doubt that June marks a decisive turnaround in Eurozone labor markets and we suspect that unemployment will trend modestly higher over the coming month,” Howard Archer at IHS Global Insight told the BBC.
“While the latest data are far from suggesting a quick turnaround, the stabilization provides some relief from the relentless rise in the number of unemployed to date,” Timo del Carpio of RBC Capital Markets added.
