Authorities issued an orange alert which would allow officials to acquire humanitarian support such as food and drinking water. The regional director of the National Risk Management Secretariat said that explosion caused pyroclastic flows and could be felt for miles.

Three zones near the volcano have undergone mandatory evacuations.

Tungurahua has been active for over 13 years and is located 84 miles southeast of Quito.
