In the wake of increased anti-terror efforts due to the country’s involvement in stopping the terrorist insurgency in Mali, the French anti-terror police have announced breaking up an Islamic terrorist cell that was targeting “well-known figures in France.”
Six suspects were arrested near Paris on Monday.
A spokesman said that all those arrested were already known to the local police and suspected as being involved in a series of armed robberies around the Paris area. The six remain jailed and can be held for up to four days under France’s anti-terror law.
On Tuesday, three more terrorists were picked up by police, two men and one woman.
Interior Minister Manuel Valls said the trio were “known for their jihadism” and “were being tracked.” Valls warned of a “global terrorist threat” and that France faces that threat from within as well as outside the borders.
“There is no longer a hermetic border between the interior and the exterior, the enemies within and those outside share in the global combat, to do harm to democracies in the name of radical Islamism,” he said.
