The World Health Organization had admitted the Novel Coronavirus (NCoV), which has killed 18 of the 34 people it has infected, can be passed between people.
The release from the WHO follows reports from France of a second man who has contracted the virus in a very likely case of human-to-human transmission. Saudi Arabia also announced two more deaths from the virus.
Since 2012 when the first cases were confirmed in Saudi Arabia and Jordan, the virus has popped up in Germany, the UK and most recently France.
“Of most concern… is the fact that the different clusters seen in multiple countries increasingly support the hypothesis that when there is close contact this novel coronavirus can transmit from person to person,” the WHO statement read. “This pattern of person-to-person transmission has remained limited to some small clusters and so far, there is no evidence to suggest the virus has the capacity to sustain generalized transmission in communities.”
The WHO report also said that while NCoV and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) are in the same virus family, they are distinct from each other. NCoV, for example, kills via pneumonia and kidney failure.
WHO official Gregory Hartl made a chilling statement to the BBC in regards to the report.
“”Until we know how humans initially contract the virus, we can’t control this.”
