A resolution scheduled to be voted on Tuesday at the European Parliament includes language that would support a ban on online pornography in the EU.

The move is part of a bill to eliminate “gender stereotypes in the EU” and is meant to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The bill presented by Kartika Liotard of Holland is asking for “statutory measures to prevent any form of pornography in the media and in advertising and for a ban on advertising for pornographic products and sex tourism” and that the members of the European Parliament would demand each government form an organization to make sure sanctions are imposed on companies that promote sexualization of girls.

While if passed the bill is not legally binding, it would be the first step into codifying the bill into a law that can be enforced.

A pornography proponent in the EU called the bill a “horrendous attack on our fundamental freedoms of speech and expression.”

In addition to the EU, Iceland is also considering a bill that would block any internet provider in the country from allowing access to pornography in the name of protecting women and girls from dehumanization and violence.
