South America Flooding Kills 6

The Pacific coast of South America is experiencing massive flooding after torrential rain deluged the region. At least six people are confirmed dead in Peru.

Arequipa in the southern part of the country has thousands left without electricity and clean drinking water due to the massive flooding. Peruvian authorities have declared a state of emergency for Arquipa and the surrounding regions. The country’s national meteorological service told the Andina news agency that the total rainfall in seven hours matched the average rainfall for three months.

“There are no records of an event of this magnitude,” Sebastian Zuniga of the service said.

In Chile, landslides into two major rivers supplying the capital city’s water plants has left four million people without water. The landslides have also blocked roadways leaving many villages cut off from emergency personnel and supplies.

Chile’s Atacama desert, one of the driest locations in the world, was deluged with heavy rain.

Bolivia has also reported thousands impacted by the heavy rain in their nation and that many crops have been lost due to flooding.
